Wo Fat - Live Juju: At Freak Valley And Beyond

Submitted by Andrew on Fri, 10/06/2017 - 12:32

Seeing Wo Fat live is the nearest you’ll get to a musical religious experience. There's something very special about a power trio locked into a stomping stoner groove, with guitars set to stun and the PA cranked to within an inch of its life. These Dallas lads have become masters of the stage and every time I've seen them they have, quite simply, fried my brain.

Our Texan friends were on rude form when they played Freak Valley Festival in Germany on 30th May 2014, from whence the first half of this monstrous album is taken. Live recordings are notoriously hit and miss but Wo Fat are captured perfectly here, their amps buzzing and fizzing with distortion and the whole thing held together by Michael Walter’s groove-laden drumming. On "Read The Omens" they boogie their way through the thick swamp of downtuned riffs with such panache and style that maybe only Scissorfight can match them for sheer unfettered heft.

The second half of this album is a 2016 recording of a hometown show with new bassist Zack Busby and if anything it’s even more special: his four-string rumble turns “The Black Code” into an aural hand grenade. This is life-affirming and epic stoner blues. It's rare you'll hear a performance this gnarly and unfettered, and as such Live Ju Ju is the perfect piece of evidence to back the claim that Wo Fat are unchallenged masters of their art.

You need to get on this. Now.
